Point And Drive

A film by Brandi Mitchell

Band is Life

" It's a history lesson, leadership development, recruitment tool, motivational talk, and PSA for hazing wrapped in an entertaining 90 minute journey "

We use our film and content to spark dialogue, teach, and serve as a model of what's possible using the vehicle of music and band to encourage college and career development, leadership, and character development. Real life experiences through the voices of renowned alumni, musicians, business influencers, and experts who benefited from being in the marching band on screen, will prove to be a tool to inspire and promote the benefit of band and music education. We also discuss the history of HBCU Bands and provide appreciation for the culture while delicately but firmly discussing the difference between discipline, the proper way to earn respect, and hazing.

A film by Brandi Mitchell

Running time: 90 minutes

Point and Drive® is a documentary that gives the world an upclose look at how music and marching in the band lays the foundation for drive and ambition in life.

Meet these unforgettable voices from various HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Bands – granting intimate access to what it takes to make the band, persevere beyond circumstance, push past limits, and ultimately who you can become because of music. Highlighting experiences from alumni of the band that became a brand, the Florida A&M University Marching 100, which was responsible for the innovation of what we now see today as "the halftime show", the documentary shows its beginnings, rise, fall, and comeback after an event that almost stopped the music -  forever.

Point and Drive demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the power of music education to raise leaders that change the world through insight from successful band alumni in various "fields" of expertise, as well as some of the top musicians and educators. Point and Drive reminds us that no matter where you are from or where you start, being of excellence and living in your passion can support your dreams and aspirations as you stay the course. It is a history lesson, leadership development, motivational tool, and PSA for hazing wrapped in an entertaining 90 minute journey.

Chapters

Act 1 : Started From the Band

"The marching band saved my life"

"I used to be a real quiet kid, but I found my voice through music. It was my medicine". Dwele

Act 2 : The Making of a Man and Band That Became a Brand

" He took adversity and allowed it to fuel him to create something that didn't exist "

"Dr Foster is a giant. Not in HBCU bands, in college bands period. What was the most admiring about him was, he couldn't march in a college band because he was black; so he never marched in a band, and he produced one of the best marching bands in the world. "

Act 3 : What it Takes to Make The Band

" Work Hard, Or Work Harder, Those Were the Options "

"I see Dr. Foster walking through the door, and he's walking to the podium, and he was like a general. He was like a president or somebody. He was dressed impeccably. Walked with authority, straight to that podium. He got up on that podium and said, "Welcome to FAMU." Little did we know, psychologically, he was preparing us for what we were about to go through. He was preparing us not for just, to be able to make the marching band, but for life".

Scotty Barnhart

"Just seeing that level of seriousness that all the upperclassmen were on to teach the ways of the 100. That one day it all hit me at one time. It was like, "Man, I got a lot of work to do. This is not gonna be like anything else that I've been a part of up to that point."

Vincent Gardner

Act 4 : The Blueprint of the Ultimate Halftime Show

" The purpose of the band is to entertain "

"Once we feel like it's perfect, then we go back and say, "Now what's that twist? What's that creative thing, that no one ever would've thought to put on a field? And now let's do that."

Act 5 : More Numbers, More Problems

" It takes a village. Everybody has to be on the same page "

" Drum majors were at the top of the leadership pole, right behind the band directors, and there was never anything that they had to do beyond that to prove themselves, so you can create new traditions - but you gotta create the right ones ".

Act 6 : Let's Go Back to The Basics, Success Leaves Clues

" In marching in the 100, there was a specific science. How many feet per yard? How many yards per football field? How many steps per minute? The Point and Drive. And in life, there's a science as well "

"You see, every performance is the new ball game. You gotta prove yourself over. Past reputation is fine, but it doesn't make it. Doesn't cut it. Because you've got all these thousands of people looking and listening, and they'll determine whether or not this is so". Dr. Foster
