The Event
28 Days of Film Screenings + Powerful Talks
February 1 - February 28, 2019
During February 2019, Black History Month, the Point and Drive Foundation will present exclusive screenings of the celebrated and inspiring documentary feature film Point and Drive to be followed by discussion with the film maker Brandi Mitchell and book signing of the just released motivational guide based off the film Point And Drive For Life: The Marching Band Factor, 10 Principles For PLAYING Big In Life and Achieving Your Goals One STEP At a Time.
POINT AND DRIVE, explores intimately the experience of making the most imitated and famous marching band in the world, the Florida A&M University Marching 100 from it's inception during segregation to present day. Known as "America's Band", the film shows for the first time the plight of it's visionary leader and Father of Marching Bands, Dr. William P. Foster, who decided to persevere to create a world class band with all African American musicians at a historically black college after he was told that no colored man could be the director of a university band. Through his denial he would innovate what we know today as the halftime show, create dozens of techniques used by bands worldwide, and expose generations of young musicians to the world through music. The documentary grants behind the scenes access from successful alumni of the "band that became a brand", and covers its beginnings, rise, fall, and comeback after an event that almost stopped the music - forever. Meet these unforgettable voices from various HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Bands that share from their own experiences the rich culture of the HBCU Marching band and what it takes to make the band, persevere beyond circumstance, push past limits, and ultimately who you can become because of music.
Through original interviews, music, live performances, dancing and rare archival footage and images, we learn that the process of mastering Point and Drive, which is actually the form of precision marching that makes the famed band so eye catching, is so much more – it transfers into an innate bar of excellence that is the measurement and standard for success in their lives.
Point and Drive reminds us that no matter where you are from or where you start, being of excellence and living in your passion can support your dreams and aspirations as you stay the course.
